Hypnosis is a totally natural state of mind that we have all experienced. It is a natural
trance state, like daydreaming, when the mind is relaxed and focused, where time passes
very quickly. During hypnosis, the mind goes into a state of focused concentration which
is similar to deep relaxation, allowing the conscious mind to be by-passed and the
subconscious mind to be open to receiving and acting upon verbal suggestions. The
subconscious mind is the source of many of our behaviours, motivations, and attitudes.
Hypnosis has been proven to be a powerful tool for accessing the subconscious mind to
allow suggested ideas or concepts to "take root", to help alter existing patterns of
behaviour that no longer serve you. Since 1958, hypnosis has been recognized as a
legitimate, safe approach to many difficulties by the American Medical Association.
When undergoing hypnotherapy, a person is aware of his surroundings in a detached sort
of way and is typically in a pleasant state of deep physical relaxation and emotional
comfortability. They cannot be induced to do anything against their will, nor is it
possible to become "stuck" in hypnosis. If they choose, they can bring themselves back
to a completely alert, non-suggestible state at any time.
Hypnotherapy can help with a great variety of issues in vocational/avocational self
improvement. Some of these are: reducing and managing stress and anxiety, improving
confidence, changing habits, pain management, and enhancing performance and personal
development.
At a young age, my father (who works with hypnosis to this day) started my interest in the
power of the mind by bringing home a Las Vegas stage hypnotist for the weekend. My step
mother, who was no less inspiring, was a certified clinical hypnotherapist for many years.
This eventually led me to study and graduate from the Hypnosis Motivation Institute of
southern California, founded by a father of modern day hypnosis - John Kappas Ph.D.
